How much supplement do you give your horse?

Seems like a silly question, doesn’t it? The answer will more than likely be ‘as much as the tub suggests’, but we find the amount of supplement really interesting, because you might be surprised at how much this varies across different manufacturers…and why this matters.

If you decide you’re going to look for, say, a hoof supplement, what do you look for? A name you can trust? A brand you like? Certain ingredients? How much it’s going to cost you? They’re all perfectly sensible, but to get real value for money, it’s always worth looking at the suggested dose, the amount of key ingredients this contains, how long a tub is going to last you and the cost per dose. We understand that every penny counts and we want you to get real value out of what you buy, so we wanted to share this with you…here are a couple of examples…

Biotin 15

biotin15_3kg_tub copyOur Biotin 15 contains 15mg per daily dose (25g) of biotin, which is the ingredient that people buy this product for…now, let’s take the middle size available, that’s 3kg, and has a RRP of £21.25.

3000g divided by 25g = 120 doses

The price for 3kg is £21.25, so we divide this by 120 dose, and we have 18p per day to feed this.

Flexijoint

Our Flexijoint is a bit of a heavyweight in the joint supplement world…and it has a pretty impressive specification. In a 20g doseflexijoint_600g_tub (recommended for horses over 16hh), it has 4000mg of chondroitin sulphate, 8126mg of glucosamine HCL, 1000mg of ascorbic acid and 60mg of hyaluronic acid, in addition to many other ingredients too. Let’s take the 1.5kg tub, which has a RRP of £56.45.

1500g divided by 20g = 75 doses

The price of 1.5kg is £56.45, so we divide this by 75 doses and we have 75p per day. However, due to the high specification, many people feed less than our recommended dose and still see great results, so that works out at even less!

So, there you have it, our hints and tips to ensure that you really get what you pay for! You’ll see most of our products online have the suggested daily dose, most have how many days the different sizes will last you, but just do your sums and make sure you get great value AND great results!
