What are electrolytes and why do horses need them?
Electrolytes are minerals that form salts in the horse’s body, salts that help with a number of body processes, from fluid regulation to muscle function and a lot in between. Many people associate the feeding of electrolytes with competition horses and, as electrolytes are lost through sweat (as well as urine and faeces), it seems logical that horses that sweat more should receive additional supplementation. This is correct, but it’s worth noting that if your horse is working hard, or he’s travelling in the lorry or trailer and that causes him to sweat excessively, he may also be in need of a little extra something.
The main electrolytes are sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium and calcium- all of which you’ll find in our Revitalyte Electro Salts. These minerals work together to help a number of body processes, with a deficiency having the potential to cause a decrease in performance, dehydration, muscle issues, lethargy, general ill health and more.
The good news is that adding electrolytes to the diet is easy. You can use a powder like Revitalyte Electro Salts and dissolve this in water (always have clean electrolyte free water available too) or mix in with feed, a paste such as Electrolyte Paste and/or give your horse free access to a salt lick to allow him to top up. The method you use will depend on your own situation and the type of work your horse is in. If you need any additional advice when it comes to which electrolytes to feed, please contact us and we’ll do our best to help you.
